Ethnic Project - In this project, I have drawn my inspiration from the African American community.
I have been absorbed into their exciting story, starting from their life in Africa, their forced transfer to America, slavery, freedom and their way of life today.
This is a project where I express my protest against racism and segregation and my main purpose is to appeal for equality between humans, and show that being different is beautiful. During my research I met stories and characters that have inspired the fabrics and the patterns I used and expressed very clearly my position.
For the textile, I took my inspiration from the "KENTE", which reflects the Afro Americans and symbolizes roots, proudness and belonging to a community, from the cotton fields where the slaves worked, from the scars physical and mental which I turned to a significant and aesthetic item, from the tentative to turn black to white with no success, and from the use of the quilt technique inspired by the Afro American artist Bisa Butler.
The patterns are taken from the street clothes, inspired by Hip Hop, Rapp and "Bling Bling", policeman uniforms in the atmosphere of the Black Lives Matter movement and patterns expressing power, strength and struggle.
